Farmers Transport was formed in 1966 as Hawke's Bay Farmers Transport Ltd but can trace its roots back to 1927 when a shepherd, Roy Sherwood using a small Reo truck began delivering goods in the area. From these small beginnings the firm of R Sherwood persevered through the New Zealand Transport Act 1931, the Hawke’s Bay Earthquake 1931, & the Great Depression, and by 1934 had expanded into the cartage of livestock. By the late 1930s the recession was easing when World War II broke out. Many transport company trucks, some of which were recent purchases were commandeered for Army use. Fuel, supplies & vehicles were rationed at a time when an increase in farm production was essential. After WWII, R Sherwood expanded its operation into bulk fuel deliveries & aerial topdressing. In 1966 Hawke's Bay Farmers Transport Ltd, a public company, was formed allowing some hundreds of farmers along with employees to become shareholders. The 1980s and 1990s saw the company continue to expand. The Sherwood family shareholding was sold in 1983. In 2015 HWR Group of Invercargill purchased a 75% share in Farmers Transport.
Lauder Transport was formed in 1994 by Allen Lauder & initially contracted to Sarjants Transport of Paeroa. From 2006 Lauder Transport has been contracted to Farmers Transport of Hastings. They currently operate two Volvo FH-16 truck & trailer stock units driven by Allen Lauder & his son AJ.
